In the camp of the Tuchuks Elizabeth had begged that I not free her for but another hour.
”Why?" I had asked.
"Because," she had said, "masters do not much care to interfere in the squabbles of slaves."
So this is not followed in real life for reasons, both good and not so good. Would you prefer slaves settle disputes without interference?
I generally think that if slave girls have personal issues to work out, they should work it out between themselves in private.
When slaves settle disputes between themselves, the balance of power matters. Whose Master has more standing (and so who feels they have more standing in the kennel; also, the thought usually runs that a personal collar conveys more standing than a Home collar), who has a grievance with the other, whether one has support for their side of the disagreement from other slaves or any Free, whether one just doesn't care to engage.
This girl has seen too many kennels become toxic when slaves are left alone to solve their own disputes, because it inevitably becomes cliquish or even bullying. When a Free Person who can remain impartial is in the kennels, then disputes can be resolved and They can intervene only when it drags on or when it either threatens to spill into the Home or is causing unrest in the kennels.
she imagines that the same thing could happen with a rl Home or community with multiple slaves. she knows they exist, and she knows that no matter how much girls love and support each other, there will be the inevitable squabble. However, she also understands that it takes a strong Man to stand aside and let two of His figure it out, let alone two Men who may not agree.
There is a certain discomfort seeing slaves argue or fight. However, I do think for the most part slaves should settle disputes themselves, without involving their Masters who would then try to exert power over each other through their slaves. I have seen it happen very often where the Free get down into the weeds where they do not belong.
That is only my opinion. This can be one of the many things that may not necessarily translate to life on Earth. The victor of the disagreement could easily be the girl who just doesn’t care.
I wonder, if perhaps it's to avoid angering men. Elizabeth had a score to settle and it may have appeared petty to the men.
